Originally called SafeFinds, The Educational Internet’s educational value now rivals its exceptional safety features. Consequently, the name Educational Internet represents the expansive "parallel Internet" collected within the system intended specifically for education. The Educational Internet has many unique features as well as patents pending for our personalized filtering, off-site tracking, protective email, and research library collection.
The Educational Internet’s protective capabilities are "socially significant." The necessity to raise awareness of the dangers on-line as well as provide a viable solution is one of our many goals. The Educational Internet has even been presented in national forums to high accolades and honors.
In an effort to help protect all children on the Internet, The Educational Internet is being distributed free to those who cannot afford it (through secured school listings), free to all schools (both public and private), and at a reduced home price in South Carolina.
The Educational Internet Goals Are:
- Organize the best educational resources the Internet has to offer and present them to students in an easy to use, easy to understand arrangement.
- To protect children from the objectionable content of the Internet, both overt and subtle from blatantly bad sites to misleading sites as well.
- Allow the addition of new approved sites, so that families can easily expand their personal database of reviewed sites with whatever sites they select.
- Provide open-ended searches that look specifically for educational sites, giving children access to in-depth material while maintaining their online security.
- Create an e-mail system that allows for both child-privacy and parental monitoring, in an effort to protect them from the immense danger of on-line predators.
The funding of development has been provided by public support and private investment. The project is in its fifth year and has been school-tested since 2001.
The Educational Internet has been developed with the student and teacher in mind. We have built a library of literally hundreds of thousands of safe and educational sites. We have also divided the system into four different age groups in order to cater to differing developmental needs. These groups include kindergarten (with voice overlays, as most children at this age can not yet read), age 7-12, age 12-15, and 15 to young adults. For the latter group you may give them "free reign" of the Internet (meaning with no restrictions to where they go) if you so choose. However, a feature of The Educational Internet called the Tracker system allows you the parent/teacher to know where they have been (what web site) and how long they have been there.
As a teacher or parent you will be designated as the supervisor. With this title, it is ultimately up to you to determine what is and is not acceptable for your home and/or classroom. In other words, you have the ability to add sites (to the existing library) that you feel are appropriate for your home and/or classroom. This allows for individuality and customization. As a supervisor you will choose a password that allows you to make such choices.
A wonderful analogy to our system is one that was made by the government appointed Child Online Protection Agency (COPA). In a letter they wrote about The Educational Internet they stated, "It is a closed garden in the best sense of that term." Indeed, you as a parent or teacher can let your children explore and learn in an enclosed, safe portion of the Internet, which consequently, allows you to have peace of mind.
The Educational Internet is made up of several dedicated employees committed to the project, whose significance we deeply believe in. The importance of such a system, in providing a safe-effective and educational solution to the problem of children’s on-line safety, drives us to succeed. Made up of still a small group of individuals, together we feel the goals of The Educational Internet can and will be achieved.
In addition to The Educational Internet’s many safety and educational features, schools, particularly administrators and teachers are excited about our fundraising programs. . See SchoolRebates.com, CommunityRebates.com, or Finding.com. Through these fundraising programs we are able to allow the system to remain free for schools, plus and maybe even more importantly these fundraising programs offer a potentially significant source of funding for other school needs.
